Rising East London songstress JADA has previously collaborated with Venna, Jordy, Scribz Riley and Ambre. With her new single on the way, we caught up to get the lowdown…
What five words define your sound?
I’d say Raw, Vulnerable, Honest, Rhythm & Blues [laughs].
Tell me something unique about your creative process?
Wherever the melody takes me, the words will follow. I think what people connect to most is the feeling first before the lyrics so that’s where I start.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
‘Magic’. It’s my first ever solo released song and one I’m really proud of.
What inspired you to make that song?
Rihanna’s ‘Anti was the inspiration behind ‘Magic’. Being able to tap into a spiritual place in order for me to release/express myself freely was the goal and sometimes I’m most honest with my feelings when I write.
What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?
I think I’m most vulnerable with everything I write [laughs], then when I listen back sometimes it’s almost a shock to me because I bury my feelings until I’m in that booth.
What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?
I’d say having to perform when I’m not feeling 100% is the worst or forgetting your own lyrics. My best experience on stage was on tour with Venna and people actually knew the words; very humbling moment for me.
What is your favourite song to perform?
‘Tam Tam’ will always be my favourite song to sing live.
Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?
Definitely Erykah Badu, Kelly Price, Donell Jones and Beyoncé. Jhene Aiko’s was one of the first writing styles I took inspiration from.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
Jada means Gift and is also believed to be the variant of the Hebrew name “Yada” which means “he knows” and I feel like I be knowing things [laughs].
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
I’d definitely still be doing something creative, Fashion or directing are two things I’d love to get into.
What’s success to you?
Success to me is being genuinely happy within myself and confident with the things I truly put my mind too. Everything else is a bonus and if you aren’t happy within yourself nothing will make you happy, it’s up to you.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
Struggling with my self esteem and confidence to the point where I started to believe those people who doubted me or hindered my growth. Thats when I knew I had to get it together and push myself to keep going.
Where can people keep in touch with you?
You can find me on Instagram and Tik tok @Justj4da.
Jada’s next single ‘Better With You’ is dropping Thursday 31st October ahead of the ‘Inside Out’ project which is dropping on Friday 1st November.
