MY FAVOURITE MIXTAPE: TROY JAVELONA

Troy Javelona

Troy Javelona’s Favourite Mixtape: At just 23 years old, South London’s own Troy Javelona has already navigated a remarkable journey—from self-taught guitar sessions as a child to amassing over 30 million streams with his breakout track ‘Go Away’. A British-Filipino singer, songwriter, and producer, Troy’s sound is a sophisticated blend of alternative R&B, Soul, and Jazz-leaning textures, all refined during his formative years between the Philippines and Plymouth.

He returns to the spotlight today following the release of his second single, ‘DARLING’. Written, recorded, and fully produced in the intimacy of his bedroom studio, the track is a masterclass in “quiet confidence.” It’s a vulnerable, stripped-back exploration of emotional processing, built on warm tremolo keys and crisp percussion that allow his fluid vocal delivery to take centre stage. Accompanied by a hazy, atmospheric visual directed by the acclaimed Ray Fiasco, ‘DARLING’ proves that Troy’s “bedroom-core” aesthetic carries the weight and polish of a seasoned artist.

While his new music looks toward the future, Troy’s foundation is built on a deep appreciation for the projects that came before him. Today, we’re sitting down to discuss the record that shaped his “sonic fingerprint” as he breaks down his favourite mixtape of all time.

What’s your favourite mixtape ever?

‘Geography’ – Tom Misch.

Why is it so significant to you?

This mixtape was one of the first projects that I ever had on repeat when I was really starting to dive deeper into music. It soundtracked a pivotal time in my life, when I wasn’t just listening anymore, but studying, absorbing, and trying to understand what made certain records hit the way they did. I absolutely loved the textures and melodies on every track, especially ‘Movie’.

Were there any artists or producers that you discovered through this tape?

Tom Misch was one of the first artists I had on repeat when I started taking music seriously. His mixtape came into my life at a time when I was transitioning from being a casual listener to someone who wanted to truly understand the craft. As I started getting better on guitar, I was inspired by his techniques and I remember watching YouTube tutorials studying his riffs.

Where exactly were you when you heard the mixtape for the first time?

I was getting into skateboarding at the time and Hip Hop and Jazz were on rotation. I remember skateboarding through the streets of London with my headphones on and ‘Movie’ by Tom Misch came up. I fell in love at first listen and that was the beginning!

Did it come into your life at a significant time?

It really did. I wanted to learn how to produce at the time so this was such a perfect time to take in this pocket of music.

How did the mixtape cover make you feel?

It made me feel nostalgic. I have had great sunny days skateboarding and driving around London with Tom Misch playing. When I listen to it, it feels so timeless.

Describe the mixtape in three words?

Perfect, energetic, warm.

What song is your personal favourite?

‘Movie’ – the song feels like a warm hug.

If you could put a price on this mixtape, how much would you pay?

I can’t put a price on ‘Geography’. It’s priceless. I don’t think my music would be where it would be now if it wasn’t for this special album.

Did you have a physical copy?

I don’t! I should!

No? Which is your favourite that you have a physical copy of?

I only keep a few physical copies of mixtapes. I started getting into vinyl and a favourite I have is ‘Circles’ by Mac Miller.
