The self-titled ’African Robin Hood’, rising Croydon artist BZ stops by to tell VIPER why this Kendrick classic is his favourite mixtape of all time...
What’s your favourite mixtape ever?
Kendrick Lamar – ‘untitled unmastered’.
Why is it so significant to you?
I feel like it’s just such a real, authentic body of work from [the] title to content to marketing. Just reminds me sometimes music should be as simple as that; just authentic.
Were there any artists or producers that you discovered through this tape?
Where exactly were you when you heard the mixtape for the first time?
In my bedroom.
Did it come into your life at a significant time?
If I’m honest, it was more significant the second time I listened to it, which was in lockdown. It just inspired me to make my music as pure and authentic as possible, taking it back to basics.
How did the mixtape cover make you feel?
[Laughs] it’s just a green space, so it really just made me feel like us as the listener paint the picture of what imagery the tape brings.
Describe the mixtape in three words?
Authentic. Pure. Unapologetic.
What song is your personal favourite?
If you could put a price on this mixtape, how much would you pay?
Did you have a physical copy?
Nah, unfortunately not but if you willing to buy it for me I will take it [laughs].
