LORD ISAAC INTERVIEW: Lörd Isaac is a London-based rapper and vocalist who seamlessly infuses genres to create a distinctive sound. Born in Singapore and raised between London and Lagos, his musical influences blend a multitude of genres. Get familiar…
What five words define your sound?
Fly, unique, bipolar, uplifting and exceptional.
Tell me something unique about your creative process.
Most of my best ideas come from when I’m in the bathroom, it sounds crazy but that’s the only place in a house I feel completely isolated and I can fully concentrate on creating.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
‘Focus on you’
What inspired you to make that song?
I feel like in the world right now, a lot of people for whatever reason aren’t where they wanna be and it leads to them being jealous of other people who have got good things going for them. I heard the beat and the first thing that came into mind was to advise those people hating, trolling or spiteful to stop being losers and focus on themselves.
What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?
I don’t really open up too much vulnerably in most of my songs to be honest, I like to use music as a way to escape from the reality of life. What I will say though, when I make love songs or heartbreak songs, it’s usually about experiences that have happened to me in my past relationships but I basically turn all that trauma into one imaginary person [laughs].
What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?
My first show performing in front of more than a thousand people, seeing my name on the same flyer as global superstars was an unforgettable feeling.
What is your favourite song to perform?
That has to be ‘In the air’ with my brother St3vorStunna and Tochi Bedford, without a doubt. Making the crowd flash their lights and watching how everyone goes crazy to such a powerful song is a great feeling.
Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?
A lot of artists inspired me to start my musical journey. I’m gonna name the top five though, in no particular order: Lil Wayne, Drake, Future, Coldplay and Kanye West. Oh and A$AP Rocky, I know that’s six [laughs] but they all had a massive influence in my sound and aesthetics today.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
So like I said, one of my musical inspirations was A$AP Rocky, his ‘Long. Live. A$AP’ album really resonated with me. He used to call himself Lord Pretty Flvcko Jodye, and i liked the whole Lord vibe [laughs]. Also a player from my favourite football Arsenal, used to call himself Lord Bendtner and another player who’s one of the GOATs, Mesut Özil, had a cool surname cause of the special Ö which was always cool in my eyes. So I went on to call myself Lörd Isaac.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
I’ll be honest, if I didn’t twist my knee, ankle and neck, I would have been playing for Arsenal. [Laughs] ok maybe I’m stretching it but I definitely wanted to be a footballer when I was younger.
What is success to you?
Seeing all my friends and family happy and thriving, thanks to me being able to help out due to my music career taking off. Also just seeing people inspired from the music I make and coming to my shows singing my songs word for word.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
I was involved in a life threatening car accident, I was crossing the road and a van ran me over. I was in a coma for a couple days, they told my mum I wasn’t gonna make it. But I’m here, so ever since then I swore to go harder, as you only live once.
How can people keep in touch with you?
I don’t want them too [laughs], leave me alone. I’m joking [laughs], follow my insta at @isaac_lelord that’s what I am using mostly and twitter too I guess, but my main account got suspended so don’t have a motion on there like that again.
