Join us as we dive into the vibrant world of Afropop with rising star Alpha P, exploring his musical journey and unique sound…
What five words define your sound?
Raw, Original, Experimental, Soulful, Intentional.
Tell me something unique about your creative process.
I always come up with the melodies first, arrange the melodies in verses, the hook and chorus before I write, then re-record the now written melodies.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
‘Light’
What inspired you to make that song?
I lost someone special to me and I made this song to kind of comfort myself while I was experiencing grief.
What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?
I think on ‘Light’ & ‘4AM’, I was most vulnerable because these are songs based off my real- life experiences as opposed to when I used to write songs based of fictional stores or stories I hear from others.
What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?
I was raging at this festival In Abuja and it had just finished raining so the stage was quite wet still, so while I was going crazy with some of my friends: Psycho YP, Laime, BabyboyAV and Zegey on stage, I fell as I was running to the other side of the stage. Luckily I got up quickly and not too many people noticed, I think that’s why there wasn’t the usual viral clip of an artist falling on stage [laughs].
What is your favourite song to perform?
It changes with every performance and audience but I’ll say it’s between ‘Majo’ by DJ Tunez featuring Wizkid, Tay Iwar and myself and ‘Paloma’.
Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?
I was inspired to make music and chase it as a career after listening to Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
Alpha P means leader. Leader of the pack.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
My whole life has revolved around music since I was 10 or 11 years old so it’s hard to imagine something else, but I would’ve either been a lawyer or a professional table tennis player.
What’s success to you?
Constant growth, genuine happiness and prosperity for my family, friends and I.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
I used to rap, then I switched to singing I think around 2015/2016 only because I found it more interesting and found out that I could explore more with my voice. However, I wouldn’t say anything forced me or I changed direction because I still infuse Rap into my music sometimes, so it’s more like I decided to evolve.
Where can people keep in touch with you?
On all social media platforms my handle is @whoisalphap or Alpha P on streaming platforms.
