What five words define your sound?
Afrocentric, soulful, inspirational, vibrant, dynamic.
Tell me something unique about your creative process.
I deeply infuse my personal experiences into my music, combining my Nigerian lingo with global sounds. This allows me to create an authentic and innovative sound that resonates with diverse audiences.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
I’d recommend starting with ‘Alhamdulillah’ because it embodies my journey of gratitude and faith.
What inspired you to make that song?
‘Alhamdulillah’ was inspired by my personal journey of overcoming challenges and expressing gratitude for where I am today. It’s a celebration of resilience and faith.
What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?
I feel most vulnerable when I’m sharing my deepest experiences and emotions through my music, especially in tracks like ‘Alhamdulillah’ and ‘Finally’, where I reflect on my journey.
What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?
My best experiences are when the crowd is fully engaged and vibing to my tune and energy. The worst are when technical difficulties disrupt the flow, but I always strive to push through.
What is your favourite song to perform?
‘Alhamdulillah’ and ‘Cheques’ are my favourite songs to perform because of their upbeat flow from start to finish. The crowd always erupts when I perform those tracks.
Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?
The music of Afrobeats legends like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Dbanj and Kizz Daniel, along with contemporary artists who blend traditional and modern sounds, inspired me to create my unique style.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
“TerryTheVoice” reflects my mission to be a voice for the voiceless, using my music to inspire and uplift others.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
I would likely be involved in creative arts or community service, staying committed to making a positive impact. Who knows, I might have been an actor!
What’s success to you?
Success is about staying true to my message, reaching and inspiring as many people as possible across the globe, through my music, and maintaining my authenticity.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
Moving from Nigeria to the US significantly influenced my music by exposing me to different cultures and sounds, and that made me realise I MUST always stay true to my roots, which is why Afrobeats is the backbone of my music creation. Afrobeats is global and we are the pioneers taking it all over the world.
