[FEATURE] VIPER PRESENTS: SUMMER BANTON

Summer Banton is a rising talent in the UK R&B Soundscape. She sat down with us following her newest release ‘Superfan’. Get familiar with her via this VIPER Presents interview…

What five words define your sound?

Unapologetic, Real, Fierce, Nostalgic, Uplifting.

Tell me something unique about your creative process.

Secretly I have no idea what I’m doing. Usually starts on the piano and then I have a venting session in the studio with whoever I’m in a session with, most of the time about my love life and an idea is born!

Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?

‘Boyfriend’ for sure. It’s very thematically on brand.

What inspired you to make that song?

I was tired of seeing girls lose their identity and independence when in relationships. I’ve been that girl before too. I wanted a moment to express that it’s ok to not need a man and just enjoy your life!

What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?

I always write from experience, I find it therapeutic that I can turn such strong emotions into vibes. I’d say I’m always vulnerable when making music.

What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?

I recently supported Libianca at her headline show in London, hearing people sing my songs back to me will forever be a surreal experience.

What is your favourite song to perform?

Probably ‘Be My Guest’ because I can have my little choreography moment!

Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?

Probably ‘Songs In A Minor’ by Alicia Keys or ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’ by Mariah Carey – two QUEENS.

What’s the meaning behind your name?

I want to shout out to my parents for doing so well naming me! My name is also my favourite season of the year and my closest friends say it describes my character perfectly.

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?

Definitely working in music trying to develop or provide a platform for new amazing artists and talent.

What’s success to you?

Someone telling me of a moment they’ve listened to my music and it’s make them feel something!

What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?

Probably the first time I ever went to a studio when I was 6. I was in awe of how it all worked and looked – I wanted to sing too!

Where can people keep in touch with you?

summerbanton_ on instagram and summerbanton on everything else!
