Born in Nigeria and raised in South London, TWYCE signed with Island Record this year, get familiar with our VIPER Presents interview…

What five words define your sound?

Vibrant, different, gritty, serious and – it’s not one word but – boundary-breaking.

Tell me something unique about your creative process

Sometimes I write with no beat, which is common for a lot of artists because it gives structure and a skeleton for a song and it makes it a lot easier for me to lay the track down in the studio.

Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?

‘Grinding’, because it was the track that first got me noticed and because it’s over a D&B influenced beat; it’s different to what I’d usually make.

What inspired you to make that song?

It was more of a mentality thing, I didn’t set out to make the track, but it really reflected where I was in my life at the time.

What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?

It’s not out yet, but I’ve got a song called ‘Twyce’s Heartbreak’ – I think a lot of males and females will relate to it because it’s proper deep.

What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?

I had best and worst moments at the same show. I supported Songer last year, the best moment was me going on stage, seeing the fans and them going crazy to my music. The worst part was at the end of my set, when I announced Songer was about to come on… and he wasn’t.

What is your favourite song to perform?

It has to be ‘Grinding’, because it’s high energy, everyone’s gassed and you can form a mad mosh-pit. There was a guy at the front when I was performing, he was moving mad and I was like “rah!”

Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?

Michael Jackson and his albums ‘Bad’ and ‘Off The Wall’. I heard them when I was young through my Pops. ‘Off The Wall’ and ‘Speed Demon’ are hard. If you look at Michael Jackson, he was a badman in every aspect; style, music, voice charisma, even though personally he was a shy guy, he spoke through music and that’s what inspired.

What’s the meaning behind your name?

I’m just twice as better, twice as hard, twice as dedicated, everything x2.

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?

Probably to do with computing, software designing or art.
