LUCIANO INTERVIEW

LUCIANO INTERVIEW: The Messenger’s Calling: Luciano on Preserving the Roots, Healing Energies, and Carrying the Prophetic Torch

For over three decades, Jephter McClymont—known to the world as Luciano—has served as a foundational pillar of conscious Roots Reggae. Affectionately dubbed “The Messenger,” his soaring vocal range, spiritual conviction, and uplifting lyricism have provided a steady beacon of hope across shifting musical landscapes. From seminal, legacy-defining albums like Where There Is Life and The Messenger to his notoriously physical, acrobatic live performances, Luciano’s devotion to his craft remains anchored in something far deeper than temporary industry hype.

As he prepares to touch down in the UK alongside Capleton for a series of historic co-headline dates, the elder statesman breaks down the personal rituals keeping him grounded on the road. In this conversation, he reflects on how his parents unwittingly shaped his musical destiny, the spiritual synergy of combining “the Fireman and the Prayerman” on stage, and why the global reach of Rastafari culture proves that authentic Roots music is still very much alive, well, and kicking.

You are affectionately known as ‘The Messenger’ for your conscious, uplifting Roots Reggae. In a culture where trends shift rapidly, how do you protect that spiritual core and keep your message so consistent?

I stay grounded by continuing to live a normal life, staying focused and remembering my purpose. I love what I do and I make sure to preserve the simple things that bring me joy—listening to good music, eating good food and living a good life.

These are the basic principles I follow to stay grounded. In the mornings, I make sure I get some fresh air and watch the sunrise. I spend time in Mother Nature, feel the sun against my skin and take a moment to reconnect with myself. These simple things help me stay present, grounded and connected to what truly matters.

Your music has always been a beacon of hope and positivity. When the world feels particularly chaotic, what personal practices or spiritual habits help you stay grounded before stepping on stage?

I do a lot of deep-breathing exercises. I find that’s one good way to centre your energy, especially before going on stage. Sometimes fans come over wanting to take pictures and of course you’re always happy to do that, but it’s also important to have a quiet moment to yourself.

I always tell my manager to ask security to give us a few minutes before the show to really focus — go over the songs, speak with the musicians and just get into the right headspace. I also like to take a little time to meditate. Those few quiet moments can really help you centre yourself and prepare for the performance.

Looking back at iconic albums like ‘Where There Is Life’ and ‘The Messenger’, how has your approach to songwriting evolved, and what continues to inspire your creative process today?

‘Where There Is Life’ and ‘The Messenger’ are two landmark albums that speak very clearly about the purpose of my existence. Anywhere there is life, there is the Almighty and there is consciousness. So, if there is someone out there who can receive some form of message through the music we create, then we’re going to send that message.

And the messenger has a purpose. I never lose focus on who I am or where I come from. My father was a carpenter and he built my first guitar. From that moment, I developed a deep love for the instrument. I practised, practised, practised. For some reason, I deeply believed that my father was carving my destiny without even knowing it.

Sometimes, our parents help prepare the path to our destiny without realising it. I’m so happy that I’ve been able to fulfil some of the dreams my parents had. My father was a musician, but he never made it to the main stage. My mother was also a great singer, but she never made it to stardom. So, in a way, I put both of their dreams together, and I hit the road, Jack!

When it comes to creating music, sometimes I’ll record ideas and lyrics on my phone, or sit with my guitar and work out melodies. Then it just grows from there. That’s how the music comes to life.
