BRITZ INTERVIEW: Introducing Norwegian-Ghanaian artist Britz, who recently collaborated with Grammy-nominated producer Pacify on ‘Ghanaman’ featuring the UK’s renowned Afro-swing collective NSG.
What five words define your sound?
African, Nordic, energetic, rhythm, flows.
Tell me something unique about your creative process.
I pray when I feel like I’m lacking creativity or don’t know what to create; that helps. It calms me down so I reflect properly.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
‘Handkerchief’.
What inspired you to make that song?
The beat. It brought out the hunger and a lot of emotions and reflections. Big shout out to Pacify for the beat.
What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?
Probably me inviting people into my life and traumas through music when I was dealing with the loss of my dad.
What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?
Performing at a venue where they have enough money to book you but then their equipment is dead. One time I was playing a gig and then their equipment didn’t support my DJ’s equipment.
What is your favourite song to perform?
An unreleased song called ‘Nifanebenkum’. From the released ones, ‘Handkerchief’.
Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?
There’s a few. MoStack, Kojo Funds, J Hus, Sarkodie.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
It’s a nickname I got from a friend. Inspired by my last name.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
Social work. If not that, I’d probably be the striker Arsenal needs.
What’s success to you?
Fulfilling my God-given purpose and being able to make more opportunities for my family’s next generation.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
I realised life is short when my dad died. That’s the moment I realised I’m only human and that my time on earth is limited. Life is too short for me to not make something out of the talent that God gave me.
