Tell us something unique about your creative process.
I love working in a peaceful and intimate environment. That calm space helps me tap into my creativity more deeply.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
‘Isaka II’ featuring Omah Lay and Tems — because it’s an international song. I want everyone in the world to experience it.
What inspired you to make that song?
My ambition to bring African music to the world. The way the song travelled made it clear that it needed a more intentional collaboration with people who not only felt the record but also had different reach in the global market.
When Omah Lay showed interest, there was no question—he was an incredible addition. I truly believe both he and Tems took the song to the next level. Tems was the cherry on top. Without a doubt, ‘Isaka II‘ is a world-class record.
What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when making music?
Emotional, expressing my pain through vocals and lyrics.
What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?
Best: When I was in London, headlining a sold-out show at Dankie Room. From the first record to the last, the crowd sang every word of my songs. It was unforgettable.
Worst: The first time I ever DJ’d in front of a huge audience, the DJ deck started malfunctioning. The first five minutes felt like the worst five minutes of my entire career.
What is your favourite song to perform?
I have many favourites, so it’s difficult to choose. But if I had to pick one, it would be ‘Yivule’ — a song from my upcoming album. I love performing it because the way the crowd responds is truly unforgettable.
Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?
Michael Jackson — ‘Billie Jean’ was a music video that raised me. Wizkid — ‘Ojuelegba’ had a major impact. And also, Mafikizolo inspired me deeply.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
Freedom.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
I’d be an actor. I love the impact actors have on people through their artform.
What’s success to you?
Ultimate peace within myself — and the freedom to experience life without boundaries.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
When my son was born. I was 21, and I had to grow up quickly. I needed to provide for him and be an example — to show him what it means to be a man through how I live my own life.
