[FEATURE] VIPER PRESENTS: MYA K

Fusing R&B and Amapiano on her latest musical offering, ‘Call Me’ produced by VELLI, South London’s songstress Mya K is captivating fans. Get to know her better with this VIPER interview…

What five words define your sound?

Flirty, playful, fresh, distinctive and fire.

Tell me something unique about your creative process

I make some of my best music when I have a bottle of Pink Moscato and Thai Sensation crisps at hand. So, I guess a trip to the corner shop is my unique part of the process.

Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?

I’d love for people to take in my latest single ‘Call Me’ so they can have a lil’ dance.

What inspired you to make that song?

‘Call Me’ is the result of a really fun and spontaneous session – VELLI and I had been listening to a lot of Amapiano tracks and decided to put our own twist on the genre. It was originally just meant to be a song for our enjoyment, but after playing it for a few people in my close circle, I realised it deserves to be out in the world.

What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?

There’s always a piece of me in my music, however I often make the stories larger than life and develop the narrative way beyond me, to the point where it’s not really my story anymore. I’m learning and trying to be more vulnerable when I write, but it’s also cool being a storyteller and creating fictional worlds within my songs.

What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?

The best experience I’ve had on stage would probably have to be when I performed at Hootananny Brixton with an incredible full band. Nothing really beats having great musicians alongside you while you sing your heart out.

I’ve had performances where the backing track stops playing, the mic cuts out mid-set, or only 10 people turn up, but I’m really grateful for every chance I’ve had to be on stage. There’s no ‘worst experience’ because they’re all lessons!

What is your favourite song to perform?

I’ve only performed ‘Call Me’ once so far, but it was so much fun! It might be my new favourite because it’s my only song that reallllly allows for dancing and shaking a leg.

Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?

I remember seeing Beyonce’s ‘Crazy In Love’ on the TV and deciding I will be a superstar. I haven’t looked back since. I also have to give credit to Frank Ocean because ‘Channel Orange’ inspired me to tell stories and take people on a journey with my lyrics.

What’s the meaning behind your name?

I wish there was an exciting back story, but my name is really just Mya Kinlock – Mya K for short.

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?

I’m one of those people that wants to do everything – I could see myself teaching, running an events company, starting a restaurant, being on Broadway and all sorts.

What’s success to you?

My current idea of success is just being able to make music full time and travelling to cities around the world to perform and meet all the music lovers out there. I love how music brings people together from all walks of life and unites them, and I’d consider myself successful if I could bask in that feeling all the time.
