Introducing Sett: with his mixtape ‘Life of a SlimeCrook‘ dropping on Friday. Sett is letting everyone know he is the real deal, no need to bluff, solidifying his place on the Memphis rap scene with co-signs from fellow Memphis peers, Finesse2tymes, NLE Choppa, his cousin Pooh Shiesty and Moneybagg Yo. 

What five words define your sound?

Five words that describe my sound would be exciting. fun. reckless. hustle and high speed — we are through the roof right now. I got too much sauce. I’m one of the newest rappers coming out of Tennessee.

Tell me something unique about your creative process.

When I book a studio session, I’m there for two, three days straight to make music. I don’t leave the studio. Me and my team really build.

Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?

“Free Marvin,” I made it when my little brother Marvin went back to jail.

What inspired you to make that song?

He ended up going to jail and I had a legal situation. I wanted to make a song that you could hear me say, “That ain’t the way no more.” I had my nephew in the video, too.

What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?

Making the song “Free Marvin” for my brother. I was letting fans in my world by rapping about a family situation. And my fans were able to relate to me because some people might’ve been going through what I was going through. Sometimes, if they hear a song like that, it may make them feel like they’re not alone.

What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?

My worst experience on stage was at my show in Tuscaloosa. I just saw a light come on and it was the Tuscaloosa police. They shut down my performance.

The best experience is just walking on stage and performing my songs. I watch my fans chant my lyrics, word for word, “Junior boy, you tweaking. Put on your mask.” I already know what’s going to happen next. Nothing but good stuff.

What is your favourite song to perform?

My song ‘Snap’ I dropped the ‘Snap (Remix); featuring Finesses2tymes, too. I put some knowledge out on that song. If they catch it, they’ll get it.

Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?

Pooh Shiesty and Lil Baby. Pooh Shiesty is my cousin and we started at zero, we didn’t have anything. Being able to see him come from where I’m from and be successful was inspirational to me. I watched him grow from when he first started making music. Then all of a sudden, he had this big record with Lil Durk.

And Lil Baby, too. He came from nothing and he made it, his block was just like my block. That inspired me because he had same struggles that I did, and he made it to the top.

What’s the meaning behind your name?

The movie, Set It Off. My dad used to watch it so much in the living room. We’ll be up until about five in the morning watching it. My mom would come downstairs and say, “Boy, you don’t know what is going on.” We would have some fake guns in the air while watching the movie. It used to be fun, those were the fun days.

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?

If I weren’t rapping, I’d be an entrepreneur. I would be my own boss.

What’s success to you?

You got to have a goal to be successful. You got to have a plan and accomplish your idea. Always having a goal and achieving it and moving on to the next goal and achieving it, is success. You always have to move forward with a new goal in life to really be successful.

What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?

My homeboy passed away. When that happened, it made me realize that I wanted to change my life and do better.
