MAGIC & BIRD INTERVIEW: Andy Mineo and Wordsplayed unpack their collaborative brotherhood, Beastie Boys influences, independent freedom, and bringing fun back to Hip Hop.
When Andy Mineo and Wordsplayed link up, ego stays firmly at the door. Operating as the duo Magic & Bird, the longtime friends and collaborators bring an undeniable energy to Hip Hop—pairing razor-sharp wordplay with pure nostalgia, avant-garde references, and unfiltered humor.
From driving around searching for army-navy stores to find the next killer hook, to trading verses seamlessly like the rap duos of the 90s, their process is as collaborative as it gets. We sat down with Andy Mineo and Wordsplayed to dive into the story behind their duo, navigating independent music careers, early Beastie Boys influences, and why true success means making home in time for dinner.
What five words define your sound?
Andy Mineo: Hip Hop, nostalgia, comedy, avant-garde, and faith. Hip Hop is the foundation of everything we do. Not just Rap music, but Hip Hop culture itself. We grew up studying the records, the history, the references, and all the things that make the culture what it is. Nostalgia comes naturally because we’re constantly surrounded by the things we love from the past, whether that’s old records, wrestling, or VHS movies in the studio.
Comedy is a huge part of our friendship and our writing process because we’re always trying to make each other laugh. Avant-garde comes from our writing style. We like creating word pictures and making references that aren’t always obvious or conventional. And faith is at the centre of everything. We’re both Christians, and that influences how we live and create.
Tell me something unique about your creative process
Andy: Nine times out of ten, we’re writing together in the same room. One thing that’s really unique is that we don’t care who wrote what. Sometimes I’ll perform a verse John wrote, sometimes he’ll perform something I wrote, and sometimes it’s a complete mix of both. We’re not keeping score.
The only thing that matters is making the best song possible. If we hit a wall in the studio, we’ll get in the car and drive around, dig through samples, or even visit our favourite clothing stores. A lot of our songs have come from those moments. In fact, one of the songs on the album started because we were driving to an Army-Navy store and came up with a hook on the way there.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
Wordsplayed: I’d probably say ‘Stamina’. It captures a lot of what Magic & Bird is. There’s Hip Hop, there’s energy, there’s humour, there’s experimentation. We’re screaming one minute, whispering the next, and trading verses back and forth. It really showcases how unpredictable we can be.
What inspired you to make that song?
Wordsplayed: We were actually going back through a lot of old So So Def records and exploring sounds from that era. We ended up following a rabbit trail while looking for something completely different and landed on an idea that became ‘Stamina’. We were also listening to a lot of Beastie Boys and studying how they traded verses and interacted with each other, which definitely influenced the record.
