DAMI TNT INTERVIEW: Dami TNT is rapidly carving out his own space as one of the most exciting new international Pop voices in global music. His ability to craft hit records as both an artist and producer – as he showcases on the ‘Supanova’ EP – sets him apart from the pack. Get familiar…
What five words define your sound?
Energetic, vibrant, colourful, futuristic and alive.
Tell me something unique about your creative process.
I freestyle on the beat first, then sit back and write it out properly. It helps me keep my originality more than when I just start writing without melodies. Melodies first then lyrics.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
I would like people to listen to ‘Kini Mo Fa’.
What inspired you to make that song?
A very funny story, it was the first time I ever got high. The experience was unforgettable.
What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?
When I am in love, I feel really vulnerable. Also when I talk about my personal struggles.
What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?
This one is very hard to forget, I was performing my song at my university’s faculty dinner and one minute in, the song was cutoff and I was told to leave the stage immediately. I felt really embarrassed. My best performance was 2020 at Unilag theatre faculty at the beat n feet concert, I performed ‘overdose’, my new single at the time and they went crazy; I was so happy.
What is your favourite song to perform?
Enjoyment has been my favourite song I perform.
Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?
Wande Coal, D’banj and Don Jazzy.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
Dami is a short form of my original name and TNT came from my friend, a brother; we started a label together in 2013. I adopted the name TNT cause Dami is a very popular name in western Nigeria. It means “Toluwanitemi,” in English “What belongs to God is mine.”
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
I would be working as an IT guy for a firm, building my certificate to earn more.
What’s success to you?
Seeing my music connect people together on a global stage and being able to use that to make a living for myself.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
When my friend and brother Tolu and i sat down to talk about this, what we wanted to achieve. I locked in cause i saw the vision for myself.
Where can people keep in touch with you?
I’m available on all social media platforms, most especially instagram.
