[FEATURE] VIPER PRESENTS: MYSIE

Get familiar with the Ivor Novello Award winning Mysie, whose recent project, ‘CONTROLLA’, displays the sounds that defined her upbringing in London…

What five words define your sound?

Electric, Wavey, Hype, Supersonic, Nostalgic.

Tell me something unique about your creative process.

My creative process is often inspired by late-night listening sessions at home, on my couch. I always aim to blend unexpected elements together and love to create vibes that feel both familiar but fresh.

Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?

‘PLAY’ by Mysie.

What inspired you to make that song?

This song was inspired by a late-night listening session at 2am. I was listening to a lot of Deep House tracks, and wanted to make something with gnarly chords combined with a Jersey club beat. Conceptually, I wanted to keep it playful and create an anthem about reconnecting with my inner child.

What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?

The most vulnerable I’ve been is during sessions with other musicians and producers. It’s always a challenge to feel like you’re in a safe space with people who may be complete strangers.

What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?

The best experience I’ve had on stage has to be at ARTE CONCERT in Paris. It was broadcast on live TV, and I’ll never forget how engaged the audience was. The acoustics were out of this world. As for the worst experience, I haven’t really had one, to be honest!

What is your favorite song to perform?

‘KITTY ON TOP’

Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?

Thundercat – ‘The Golden Age of Apocalypse’

What’s the meaning behind your name?

Mysie is a nickname derived from my middle name… which I won’t reveal because everyone I tell loves to make fun of it!

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?

Acting. I still do some acting, but if I weren’t making music, I’d probably focus on it more!

What’s success to you?

Success, to me means creating freely, without doubt or limits.

What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?

After my third EP, I felt a sense of loss and fear about not knowing what was next. A lot people were coming and going in my life and i wasn’t used to so much change in such a short space of time. I didn’t quite recognise who I had become in the past few years so, I knew I needed to reconnect with myself, my roots, and my original passion for music, which came through dance.

Where can people keep in touch with you?

@mmmmysie on ALL socials!
