From the Winter 2024 Issue:
Emerging from the vibrant streets of the Bronx, New York, Lil Tjay has quickly ascended to become one of the most captivating figures in modern Hip Hop. By the age of 23, he had outdone his own expectations, selling out the legendary O2 Arena in London, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. Many artists in his position would brag about achieving this at such a young age, but Tjay plays it cool, saying “It’s great but I don’t necessarily celebrate, I think the show is the celebration.” He adds, “I didn’t think this far ahead, honestly.” The October 2024 show saw him captivate London’s crowds with appearances from his friends and collaborators, Polo G and Fivio Foreign.
Born Tione Jayden Merritt on April 30, 2001, Lil Tjay faced a challenging upbringing in the South Bronx, where themes of struggle and resilience were part of everyday life. He turned to music early on as an emotional outlet, piecing together experiences from his environment into lyrical form. Drawing inspiration from legends in his city, Tjay cultivated a sound that allows him to express raw vulnerability alongside catchy melodies.
“I THINK LIFE REVOLVES AROUND ENERGY”
Lil Tjay’s music features a unique blend of melodic Rap and emotional storytelling, a style that resonates deeply with fans from various backgrounds. He skillfully fuses melodic hooks and smooth flows, creating an accessible sound that remains introspective to its core. His production often features atmospheric beats enriched by piano riffs, smooth bass lines and Trap rhythms, allowing his heartfelt lyrics to shine through. “Part of the reason why I came in with confidence on records when I first started is that a lot of my songs were written in my early days of being incarcerated.” Explaining how this time brought him hyperfocus to his words, he continues, “I’d probably read a paper over with one song on it for about four or five months. So by the time I’m delivering it, I’d tried every way to flow these lyrics.”
The experience made him a better performer, with Tjay noting, “I remembered them and I would flow with a different level of confidence than if I was to just write a song and try to reread it. I feel like those days forced me to spend more time on my music now.” His tracks often delve into themes around heartbreak, loss and the pursuit of dreams. Songs like ‘Hold On’ illustrate his ability to convey poignant messages about perseverance against life’s adversities. Tjay’s signature sound is complemented by his flexible approach to melody and rhythm, allowing him to effortlessly transition between laid-back ballads and energetic anthems.
