For The Bold, The Confident, and The Disruptor, Jewelry Designer Martine Ali to Present First Take on the New Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge

With an aesthetic now defined by sleek, modular and utilitarian pieces that evoke the hip-hop and alternative energy of the 90s – early 2000s, Martine Ali’s accessories have become signature to the creative and cultural icons of our time.

Ali began to experiment with metals through chain-based accessories within the industrial setting of her Brooklyn studio. Long inspired by the energy of New York City, Ali’s studio practice became her signature creative process resulting in pieces that were familiar yet reimagined, and versatile with an aptitude for experimentation. With this approach, Ali is enlisted as the first creative partner to explore her take on the new Converse Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge.

As the newest addition to the De Luxe family, the Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge offers a radically sculpted, angular midsole as its centerpiece. Fueled by an EVA foam midsole, the silhouette provides nearly four inches of elevation and touts an asymmetric squared toecap. With a radical stance, dimensionalized profile, and lightweight comfort package, the upper embraces the classic design language of the beloved Chuck Taylor All Star but boasts a boldness all its own. Through its angular construction, this new proposition drives new forms of style and expression and is unlike any other offering in the Converse portfolio.

Expressing a desire to materialize the De Luxe Wedge in a manner both transformative and refined, Martine began her creative exploration on the silhouette. Leveraging inspiration from waders, the work manifested to provide the opportunity for two distinct stylings of the product – with and without a gaiter. Synonymous with New York styling, the silhouette is first presented entirely in Black, featuring full leather upper with a tonal Chuck patch, midsole, lace, and toecap.  Five stud closures marking the upper in Martine Ali’s signature metallic finishes and contrast stitching on the collar. The studs offer utility as well, allowing the gaiter to snap into the silhouette. Crafted to be adjustable, breathable yet durable, the gaiter features minimal co-branding, a full-length zippers, and wax laces to provide unrestricted styling for the wearer.

The collection, which comes to life in an official campaign shot by Hannah Sider and creative directed by Martine Ali, draws from Ali’s exploration of characters within her creative community. Set within an industrial backdrop, Ali’s aesthetic is tapped to showcase the various styling options of the wedge – giving each cast member their own unique take. Featuring Ali, Caloy Bangah, Donovan Green, Cassie Jekanoski, Hillary Lui, Neon and Toni Renee the imagery and videos aim to display a diverse representation of femininity.

The Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge is the latest example of Converse repurposing its DNA as a platform to advance style, fit, form and function. As Converse builds the future, it will continue to provide opportunities for the creative expression of those, like Martine Ali, who are shaping culture.

The Converse x Martine Ali Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge debuts globally on December 1, 2023, on Converse.com and select global retailers. In Europe, the collection will go on sale at select retailers in early 2024.
