What five words define your sound?
Energetic, Groovy, Hypnotic, Electronic, Melodic.
Tell me something unique about your creative process
There’s 3 of us so we’re always bouncing ideas off of each other, sending ideas back and forth. It’s good to have 3 opinions / sets of ears. One of us might pick up on something that the others didn’t.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
I’d probably say our latest release with AJ Christou, Samburu, as it’s the most up to date demonstration of our sound.
What inspired you to make that song?
We just wanted to make something true to both our our sounds that would engage the dancefloor at any time. We’ve been friends for over 10 years and have been working together for a very long time so it’s easy for us to collaborate. It’s been getting great reactions so far.
What’s the best experience you’ve had on stage?
The best experience was probably playing back to back with Loco Dice and the Desolat label crew for 7 hours in London a few years back. We’ve been looking up to Dice since we first gained an interest in electronic music. He’s one of the greats and he’s taught us a lot over the years so it meant a lot to us.
What is your favourite song to perform?
Probably our Peru edit. We put it up a long while ago now but people still ask for it to this day. It’s a feel good, singalong track that always brings the mood up. It’s a fun one to play.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
Mason Collective relates to our event, MVSON, which came first. The name is just a flip of the french word for house, ‘maison’.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
Honestly, it’s hard to say. We’ve all been working towards a career in music since before we left school. The last job I had (Adam) before committing to music full time was in an office, and the last job Blair had was at an estate agent, so maybe something along those lines.
What’s success to you?
Being able to travel the world, gaining different experiences in different countries sharing the music we grew up with and love, spreading good energy.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
Probably the first time we all went to (the now defunct) Sankeys Manchester. It was a mecca for house and techno lovers all around the country. The first time each of us went we probably got in using fake IDs and didn’t know much about clubbing or electronic music at the time. It was such an eyeopener. I think that’s where the obsession was triggered for us. It’s also where we came up with the idea to start our own night, MVSON.
