[FEATURE] VIPER PRESENTS: OMAFUMAY

Omafumay is an energetic UK based Afrobeats singer with a genuine love for music. We got to know her with this VIPER interview…

What five words define your sound?

Melodious, catchy, captivating, feel good and edgy.

Tell me something unique about your creative process.

I get more inspiration when I travel abroad to a hot country mainly Nigeria, for some reason I get more inspired when the weather is hot and good vibes.

Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?

My latest release ‘Live Life’, followed by my previous release ‘No Stress’, I can’t choose one [laughs] I love them both.

What inspired you to make that song?

‘Live Life’ was inspired by my state of mind, I wanted a song that expressed how I feel, I was at a stage in life when I just wanted to travel and do the things that made me happy while not really caring what others thought of me, as long as I was true to myself. Then ‘No Stress’ was inspired by my knack for business and being a boss chick, I feel it’s really important for you as a person to be able to do it for yourself and be able to generate income and understand the business aspects of things.

What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?

That’s a good question, I would say isolating myself in the studio at a time where I’ve felt close to giving up after having sacrificed a lot, in terms of time, money, energy, etc and realising that I have keep going and give it all I’ve got and be strong in prayers.

What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?

I’ve actually only had really good experiences, where the crowd have been really good and able to relate to my songs, especially the females. I’ve been told I bring energy to the stage and I hope it remains that way, God willing.

What is your favourite song to perform?

My Single ‘No Stress’, it’s definitely that female empowering song.

Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?

I would say Destiny’s Child, ‘Writings On The Wall’ and Rihanna, ‘Music Of The Sun’.

What’s the meaning behind your name?

My real name is my stage name Omafumay, which originated from Nigeria and means God has given me peace.

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?

I would be working in a tech company, I have a fascination for all things tech and IT, that was what I studied in university. It could still be on the table long term hopefully, in terms of maybe starting a consultation firm.

What’s success to you?

Success to me is being in a position that you’re able to financially help and inspire others to achieve their goals and aspirations. It’s to genuinely make a positive and impactful difference in the world through your gifts and talents.

What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?

Oh gosh, this was years ago when I had travelled from London to go to Nigeria, trying to break into the Afrobeats scene. I had a lot of meaningful somewhat educative songs which people weren’t really vibing with and I was told that the grammar was too much, people want to hear light-hearted lyrics and feel the beat. So yeah, that definitely made me change the direction of my music, but it’s a direction and sound that I’m also happy with.

Where can people keep in touch with you?
