[FEATURE] VIPER PRESENTS: SUMMER PEARL

[FEATURE] VIPER PRESENTS- SUMMER PEARL

London Neo Soul/R&B artist Summer Pearl released her debut mixtape ‘outmysystem’ via Kitto Records earlier this Winter. Get familiar with this VIPER interview…

What five words define your sound?

Honest, Raw, Jazz, Soul, Black

Tell me something unique about your creative process

Most of the time, I need to work alone. I prefer to lay out everything raw with no
added opinion. It’s a personal process.

Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?

Feed My Soul

What inspired you to make that song?

I was going through a ‘shedding’ period. Shedding past relationships – love and
friendships, and starting to build myself up again as a person.

What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?

I’m vulnerable in everything I do musically. It’s the only space I allow myself to be;
without fear of judgment. It’s my therapy.

What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?

Best experience was probably at Cully Jazz Festival in Switzerland. I wasn’t
expecting the audience to be so big for me and myself and my band ‘the anatomy’
let everything go that night – we felt free.

No worst experience, performing on stage is all about creating moments, so its up
to me to keep the energy up or down.

What is your favorite song to perform?

Right now, Green Eyes. It’s become a fan favorite, so I enjoy hearing the crowd
singing it back to me. I also love the way my band play this tune. We come up with
new renditions often.

Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?

Erykah Badu – Baduizm. Erykah made that album for us 90’s babies. There are
certain frequencies throughout that attracted me and I’ve been a fanatic ever since.

What’s the meaning behind your name?

Summer (the hottest season) Pearl ( the only gem that requires no cutting or
polishing before use, it’s simply stunning the way they naturally form).

I was named after the jazz standard ‘summertime’ and Pearl is my great
grandmother’s name.

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?

Personal training (which I do anyway) – I love the gym and helping people get to
their goals (check out @pearlsanatomy

What’s success to you?

Resonation of my material with a large (or small audience). I hope people feel what
I feel when I perform/write
