London-based alternative Soul musician Zubi reveals to VIPER which career choice he made just to annoy his dad…
What five words define your sound?
Soul, Rain, Cold, Real, Closed.
Tell me something unique about your creative process
I have to play a different character sometimes to make a song.
Which song of yours would you like people to hear first?
‘Weight’
What inspired you to make that song?
I felt it was an escape from my simple life, I had nothing really I was good at.
What’s the most vulnerable you’ve allowed yourself to be when writing/making music?
I have held on to something bad for me, just to keep the feeling of the song.
What’s the best/worst experience you’ve had on stage?
The best experience was when some guy told me, “my daughter needs to hear your songs.” As for the worst experience, I don’t think I’ve had a bad one yet.
What is your favourite song to perform?
‘We Hoped’
Which artist/song/album made you want to make music?
Masego and Anatu in Budapest.
What’s the meaning behind your name?
My dad didn’t like the idea of me doing music at a point so I took his name to annoy him but [laughs] here we are.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
NOTHING! Can’t even imagine not making music!
What’s success to you?
Freedom to wake up and do anything.
What moment in your life/career forced you to change direction?
When my friends acted new when I messed up.
Where can people keep in touch with you?
I’m @zubisoul on everywhere but not sure I can answer all.
