Despite being discussed as “one of the pioneers of New German Soul” by ARTE Tracks and having played Montreux Jazz Festival in 2022, the musical pioneer has never released his own project – until now. On the eve of his new project, we asked NINJA KIDSOUL to tell us all about his favourite mixtape…
What’s your favourite mixtape?
‘The Warm Up’ by J. Cole.
Why is it so significant to you ?
In my eyes Cole started something completely new.and he was so real about it, to the point, where it gave you goosebumps and made you want to pursue your dreams in any way possible. It was nothing like I had ever heard, it taught me that there are many ways to express ones thoughts/ emotions combining jaw braking lyricism/ a wide range of vocals and humour.
Were there any artists or producers that you discovered through this tape?
I had discovered Ski Beatz and Elite, who are know for their work in Dreamville Records.
Where exactly were you when you heard the mixtape for the first time?
I was on the US military base in Schweinfurt, Germany walking home. I had heard a crazy beat from a distance, coming from a homie’s headphones so I asked him who it was and he replied, “J. Cole.”
How did the mixtape cover make you feel?
Like I needed to step my game up.
Did you have a physical copy?
Sadly, no.
Describe the mixtape in three words?
⁃ Perspective
⁃ Dedication
⁃ Greatness
What song is your personal favourite?
‘WELCOME’ and ‘Dollar and a Dream II’
If you could put a price on this mixtape, how much would you pay?
Realistically speaking? Priceless… but if you guys want a number I would say $200
On September 1st, Ninja Kidsoul will share his hotly anticipated debut EP ‘Never Really Gone’ alongside focus track ‘Zone’.
