VIPER sat down with London born lyricist Fliptrix in the lead up to his upcoming UK tour to hear all about his favourite mixtape…
What’s your favourite mixtape ever?
DJ Louis Slipperz ‘£10 bag’.
Why is it so significant to you?
It was a big inspiration for me when I started making music. I found it at a very key time after I’d been listening to US [Hip Hop] for a long time, when I heard from people from the UK rapping with their own accent, talking about places and things I can relate too it really inspired me to pick up the pen and start making music. Not long after I was recording my own songs with friends around the area and the rest is history!
Were there any artists or producers that you discovered through this tape?
Yeah definitely, I mean it was packed with loads of classic names like Jehst, Rodney P, Roots Manuva and many more. I can’t remember who exactly I discovered through the tape as it dropped many years ago and I’ve smoked a lot of £10 bags since then [laughs].
Where exactly were you when you heard the mixtape for the first time?
Probably in a mate’s yard, probably smoking a £10 bag.
Did it come into your life at a significant time?
Yeah right when the underground scene in London was really starting to pop, real early in my career. It was a classic time for Hip Hop in the UK, loads of shows, open mics, people freestyling, collabing, jamming together, in real life, organic, pre-social media times. It was a great era for music.
How did the mixtape cover make you feel?
Like picking up a £10 bag, smoking the loud, while listening to the £10 bag, loud.
Did you have a physical copy?
Yeah, not sure what happened to it, it got lost in the cosmos somewhere along the journey. Potentially swapped for a £10 bag. Another dope mixtape that I rated a lot was DJ Skully presents Klashnekoff – Focus Mode. That has some real bangers on it.
Describe the mixtape in three words?
Classic, London, Underground.
What song is your personal favourite?
That’s a tough one, but if I had to choose one I’d say Roots Manuva – ‘Witness The Fitness’. Thats a real timeless joint right there. I remember watching him perform live at Outlook Festival in around 2016, and the reaction that track got was next level and will be something I will always remember!
If you could put a price on this mixtape, how much would you pay?
£10.
